“Zingara” is the Ballet Suite I have written about the experience of an entitled girl and her moral dilemma on where she stands in society. The whole suite is comprised of seven movements which each accommodate a full orchestra. My suite was greatly inspired by the great zest, sexiness, and energy the story “Zingara” shows off. On this webpage, I have included the audio excerpts from the fourth and sixth movements of the “Zingara”. The fourth movement was greatly inspired by the frenzy of the circus. The trumpet, clarinet, and flute each get separate melodic lines, representing the many different acts at the circus. The general feel of this movement is one of craziness, excitement, and sexiness. This fourth movement is excitement and passion at its highest within the suite. The sixth movement, on the other hand, is a purely texture-based movement. It represents the hopelessness and despair that formulates due to the grandmother’s death. I decided to utilize dissonant harmonies and dark textures. In this movement, I was especially thrifty with the use of the full orchestra tutti. I was very careful in choosing instruments and used a quantity of pitched percussion like the Glockenspiel, Celesta, Timpani, and Xylophone. I used the Glockenspiel by itself at some points in the piece and repeated an eighth-note motif in every instrument and in most every bar. This creates an atmosphere of emptiness and of completely giving up. Ever since I started composing when I was six years old, I have always had an interest in percussion instruments. This sixth movement was my first experiment with using percussion as a main instrument. All the instruments used in the Ballet Suite were inspired by my early experiences with composition. I have written pieces for voice, piano, string instruments, and winds in the styles of Classical, Jazz, Pop, and Soul. I based the instruments and textures of “Zingara” off the motifs and instruments of my earlier years.
